Wiki Spoof: Canadian newspaper makes gutsy move

A satire on Canada's Indian Minister John Duncan achieved its purpose, before the Wiki Spoof of a Duncan diary was removed from the First Perspective and Regina's Leader-Post.
An article supposedly based on a Wikileaks diary of Duncan found a new home temporarily on Wednesday, after the minister requested that the original publisher, First Perspective, remove it. But then, even the Leader Post pulled the satire, at the request of Duncan.
In the article by Obidiah, Duncan complains of having to "suck up to all those chiefs," and endure prayers and that "pipe thing." He worries over fish gut soup, with his liver the way it is, and moans about polar bears.
In the end, it was revealed as a satire and both newspapers took it down. But the author, Obidiah, achieved the true purpose of satire. For public officials, there's no escaping satire. Webster's definition of satire is: 1) a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn 2) trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly.
The article reposted by the Leader-Post appeared on Google News on Wednesday with no mention that it was a satire. It was considered authentic and First Nations people were insulted, urging Duncan's removal.
Here's one of the leaky statements:
"Chretien and Trudeau had it right in the 69 white paper. The only hope for them is assimilation into the mainstream culture. And the gradual decline of numbers residing on reserves. I mean, what hope is there for a community on the Hudson Bay? With not even a road in? And polar bears!"
Although it is satire, its language and tone is not very different from the authentic cables of US diplomats published on Wikileaks, especially those from Bolivia, Chile and Brazil. There's the same arrogance and display of white privilege.
As for insulting people, the authentic cables from US diplomats spare no one, in particular Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Bolivian President Evo Morales.
One of this week's authentic diplomatic cables describes the Mafia and the toxic dumping of cancer-causing medical waste and human skeletons near Naples, Italy. On Thursday, the authentic Wiki released dozens of US diplomatic cables from Iceland, as an Icelandic Parliamentarian fought the US over seizure of Twitter records.
World leaders were also shocked to find out from the authentic Wikileaks that the US State Department was snooping and collecting their e-mail passwords, credit card numbers and even DNA samples.
Earlier, the authentic Wikileaks exposed the illegal wiretaps of Mohawks. An article is on Censored News.
As for the Wiki spoof on Duncan, it began to sear webpages and inflame the continent early Wednesday. The Leader-Post, who had reposted it, added a note at the top of the article, stating it was satire and the newspaper would leave it up, for those who think it is funny.
But, then, the blogger at Leader Post, RezXtra Chris, Chris Tyronne Ross, removed it.
"At the request of Michelle Yao, Communications Director for John Duncan, the Minister of Indian Affairs, I decided to pull this story from the RezXtra blog. Sorry guys, but this just got too much unwanted attention, okay next story," RezXtra said.
"So at the end of the day, what did we all learn here? That the Internet is a crazy place and satire is not always a funny thing," he said in a post.
Earlier on Wednesday, Kevin Blevins, deputy editor of the the Leader-Post, said the post would remain up.
"Editor's note, the following post is intended as satire. First Nation blogger Chris Tyrone-Ross found it after it was posted originally by First Perspective as a legitimate news story, but that publication has since removed the story from its web site at the request of the Ministry of Indian Affairs. We intend to leave this post up on this blog, for those who may find the satire entertaining and funny. However, we must emphasize that the following list is simply satire and is not factual in any way. It is not meant, in any way, to serve as an opinion of the job John Duncan is doing as Minster of Indian Affairs."
